If you're building an LED cube you're probably going to be using a decent amount of current, so I'd look at LED drivers instead. They're like shift registers but designed specifically for driving LEDs. My favourites, although they can be more expensive, are the MAX7219 and 7221 (7221 can provide more current than the 7219). What you must have meaned is the cathodes connect to the digit pins in bunches of 8, and those pins provide ground one at a time, and then during that time provide high on the appropriate segment pins. But what I don't understand how this can be used to control a 8x8x8 cube, which is essentially a 8 cathode x 64 anode array.

Your first instinct is to hook up the digit pins to the 8 layers of the cube, and then divide the 64 leds of each layer to the segment pins of 8 max controllers. This seems like it should work, but soon you realize there is no quarantee that the controller chips are in sync. Each has its own timer so they will be activating different layers at the same time, interfering with each other.
